Mom Living One Hundred-Years

I'd like to dedicate this article to my mom and to all mothers out there. This is just an idea of mine wishing God to let my mom live one hundred years.I want her to see more of my accomplishments/surprises for in the coming future. Saving for these activities/plans needs time and preparation. I'm running out of time. She's in her mid-sixties and retirement period. By the time I'm 30 probably she's in her 70's.

She made a lot for me and I want to make a lot for her too. She probably doesn't ask for it but in return to her goodness, I'd like her to live  30 years more. Working in an environment where I witness different fatal diseases makes me worried that my mom will be taken away from me anytime .

My mom is a single parent since 1998 (after my father died of aneurysm at the age of 49 or 50). She raised her 4 children working as a librarian in a government institution. This is one reason why I think mothers should not be a plain housewife. I believe that women should also be prepared and well educated before getting married. Working is a must so she can support her family in case the husband dies.

When my dad died, an amount of money was received. She used it to buy educational plans. I believe she also started buying life insurance for she knows that a it's not a joke to spend thousands for a funeral. Knock knock on the wood. 14 years has passed. Thank God for lending her to us till now and thank you for more years to come.

I was ten when the incident of losing a father happened.
Life was never easy before. I remembered when my mom used to wear those black clothings for a year and still be able to bring us out every sunday after mass just to divert the pain barely looking at our home without a father. There were times she cried a lot but her care for us was never been affected.

She is strong. She is not the crying emo-type. If others get depressed the whole time, she started going back to work as a teacher and librarian. She was already planning about the future, her children's future.

I would always remember the times when my mom would do something for us not to feel such poverty. In rare cases, she would be buying  viand in exchange of a bunch of banana grown by her at the back of our house. She would be making charcoal out of crumpled-soaked-and-dried paper for us to use just incase we no longer have gas and I remembered cooking with those for two to three days. I would also remember when I was in college wherein she cried because (I brought some of my groupmates for an overnight to finish our project) we don't have gas and enough food to serve. So she did the same thing giving a bunch of banana to the store owner and promised to her that she'll pay when the salary comes.

This is not always the case. We tasted brand new clothes and shoes. We tasted great foods. During Christmas bonus, she would give us 500 pesos to buy what we want for Christmas. We were never taught to spend much on something we really don't need. Buying a school shoe not until the old one is torn was her way of teaching us the value of money. Not spending much on our birthdays helped her save for our allowances and baon in school.

I would also remember looking at her pay check with only an amount of 3,000 php left with all the deductions of her loans (she built a house for us in case she will be retiring), GSIS, and all other stuff. Salary comes every fifteen days. I would be asking the same question every fifteen days. Well I was wondering how come this happens. My mom is working in a State University, with masterals degree, with PhD (finished at her late fifties?). How come she receives only this? Anyway, I would be excited to accompany her to buy groceries thinking that there will be some extra penny for my wants. We ended up buying the usual needs- sugar, salt, a kilo of pork, a kilo of chicken, two canned-goods (tunna is my favorite), a bag of powdered soap (yes we have a washing machine :)) soy sauce (silver swan brand) , vinegar (datu puti brand), shampoo, toothpaste, if there still enough penny I would ask her to buy hotdogs (with cheese is what I like the most), my favorite banana bread (with cinnamon and nuts) and some others. But if no extra money, I would just enjoy looking at the different goods around, smell the different fragrances on the soap section (ariel was our favorite), look at those breads and just swallow my saliva back.I patiently carried our baggages back home and realizing she's carrying the biggest bag. Maybe I was thin that time and not strong enough to carry it or maybe just because it's her instinct that she doesn't want me to get tired that much. I tried once to carry the biggest bag myself but ending up saying , " Mama, agsukat ta haan ko kaya. Alaek na lng to no malpas ijay crossing".

My mom was 2 inches smaller than me. She's 5 footer and a skinny but not on the abdomen area (excess fat on those area related to four times pregnancy). My mom is whiter-skinned than me even if many times she would be working on our backyard garden under the sun. You can consider her mestiza during her younger days. Probably thanks to chinchanzu (chinese face cream).  I tried it myself before but I don't like the smell and sticky feeling in my face.  She doesn't wear expensive clothings. Most of the clothes she wear are from the famous Ukay ukay bands.  Buying inexpensive make ups is also of her thing. Just simple with her well color coordinated clothes.

So I went asking how come we live well being able to eat three times a day, have decent clothes, go to a private school in college with three thousand pesos for every fifteen days. This is not exaggerating. She explained to me in laymans terms that she had a lot of loans. Loans for our college funds, our two-storey house with an attic (the family loves attics as passed over by dad's love for attics), allowances and the like. Living in a semi- city needs a lot of money. A lot of goods needed and temptations to spend your money. But because we know that we aren't that rich enough, we never asked that much. I started college with 50 pesos allowance (that was already enough for a budget meal lunch and back and forth fare) and so with my big brothers. I already received hundred pesos when I was in 3rd year college. We had curfews at home, whenever it's dark, it's time to go home unless there some activities needed to go home late at night (no need to explain). At home, our viands are not ea- all- you-can buffet style. If we have fried chicken, one medium sliced is enough for you to have something tomorrow. There are some things not needed to be explained. We were taught how to be thrifty the indirect way.

My brothers and sisters were successful saving from their daily allowances except me. they were able to buy their gadgets on their own. My cellphone were only secondly handed to me by my brother. I tried to had my own piggy bank but ended up opened for a buying some thing I like.

But how come? How come my mother was able to bring us up without feeling so poor? I know of some people who are richer than our family but not able to fulfill their children's wishes to go to a private school.

I didn't ask her directly but these are some of the answers she brought up:
1. Be thrifty! Do not buy unnecessary things but rewarding yourself once in a while is not a bad idea. Save as much as you can.
2. She spent thousands of pesos on our college funds which we were able to use once we reach college.
3. Loans, and direct utang. I don't know if there is someone who is utang-free. You just have to learn how to classify good from bad debts.
4. To be able to spend more for important things, you must spend less for less important things.
5. She tried her best to be thick-skinned or in local term kapalan ang mukha to ask for help to other people just like what she did to exchange a bunch of banana to a viand or ulam.
6. Be creative in recycling or upcycling things.

Now that we all graduated and out of her house. I think it's time to plan what I should instore for her.

I pray that God will give her longer and make healthier this coming years. With a longer span of time, I will have a longer time to prepare well for her future (just like parent planning for her child).

Here are some of the plans I made to keep her smiling and in return of her efforts. I can never repay her outmost care and love just like she did but I'll try my best to do them.

  •  Bring her to another country for a tour at my own expense (atleast twice) and another touring locally (atleast twice a year or more).
  • Celebrate her incoming birthdays a memorable one.
  • Build her a house or finish our house that was started by her
  • Give her atleast two grandchild or more (of my own) for her to spoil
  •  Give her the freedom of buying the things she likes
  • Give her a garden to tend to whenever she is bored
  • We'll have a hundred dates together.
  • Let her taste to most delicious food in the world (eating in Singapore or Hong Kong
  • Jogging moments or brisk walking together and stopping by a bakery to eat some pandesal
  • and a lot more, big surprises ahead!
I know she suffered a lot in her past and I just want to let her feel we loved her that much even if we don't often say it in words.

How about you, how do you plan to return back the love to your mom. I hope I inspired you in a way. Plan it and make your mom live a-hundred-years or more.

I'd like to dedicate a this song for all mothers out there who made their children proud.

"PASALUBONG AT KUMUSTAHAN"

While I was watching ANC On The Money, a question from an OFW was raised up and it asks,

" I'll be going home in the Philippines. My family and friends are expecting me to shoulder the money that will be used for the incoming occasions. My question is, should I start hiding myself?"

Most of the people left in the country expects an ex-abroad to have saved a lot of money. But they wouldn't have known that at the back of these ex-abroad workers are scared of that expectation. We'll it's not that they have nothing. Most of them would have saved for a more important thing such as their children's education, house and lot perhaps, bills, life insurance fees probably and other things.

Filipinos have one characteristic famously known as "Pa-libre naman jan attitude". This happens usually when a person achieved something then someone says ti him/her "Pa-burger na yan". Sa kabila nito, dahil masaya siya, nagpaburger nga. This is something nice in a way that we get along and celebrate things in life. This also applies to OFW's and most of their family and friends says "Pasalubong ko ha! Size 7 (mentioning his shoe size) ".

Kaya ang ibang OFW ay nagtatago. Hinid nila pinapaalam na nasa abroad sila. Pag umuwi hindi rin pinagsasabi. Nope! This aren't tips guys!

Let's go back to the show On the Money. The guest's answer was,

" You don't have to shoulder every occasion that comes. Be polite and honest to them that this is the only budget I can share. Like for example, I can only give an amount of php 5,000.00. That's it."

I would like to add. If you can prepare pasalubong before going home, then that would be nice to show that you have thought of them while you were away. Pasalubong doesn't have to be expensive. Remember that you don't have to show off.

Welcome party doesn't have to be extravagant. It is always nice to tell your family at home ahead of time that you don't need a big party. A simple get together with kumustahan para makabawi sa mga araw na nagdaan, is already a big event in your life. You could always suggest to them specific filipino foods that you would like to eat that you haven't eaten for a long period of time.

I hope you enjoyed reading. Sa mga OFW, masayang pagbabalik. At sa mga naiwan, gawin sana nating masaya ang kanilang pagbalik at hindi perwisyo sa paglalabas ng pera and kanilang datnan.

GENERATING INCOME FOR THE FUTURE

Short term career(contractual basis) like being in a three year contract scares me. This is what's happening to OFW's. After the contract, they have to find a new opportunity to support themselves or their family. In short, it means that a person who have worked abroad is not equivalent to a bottomless- ice- tea promo in TGIF restaurant. But if you have prepared well, with goals and priorities in life, you'll be able to provide.

If you don't have a job to land in in the first few months, you should have prepared for it. Around 6 months-1 year atleast should be provided/covered by your savings to provide for your needs and for your family (if incase you have to provide for them). If you have applied earlier while your in the contract and luckily you got the job right after the contract then well and good.

Knowing this case scenario, it would atleast lead you to a far better ideas on how to generate your income.

From Nannette Ferreria's (Director, MoneyDirector, Inc.) point of view,

"Saving is not the key to being wealthy but knowing where to put your money will make you wealthy."
She is just saying that saving your money in the  piggy bank won't generate your money. Almost all of the financial advisers would mention about about investments. Among the options are mutual funds, opening up a business, stock investments. However, all these mentioned above take risks.

Here is another catch. Do not ever go into something without consulting an expert/ experienced. Knowledge is always a must when entering something. When you say an expert, he/she must be in the field. Examples of which are financial consultants/ advisers (which are licensed), entrepreneurs who have engaged into successful business, or even your supportive parents can be an experienced when it comes to money.

Generating income is not as easy as it seems but starting earlier would be a best option. Starting early like while you are still single is another better option.

Plan now and act now. Going back home and meeting the family  after a three year contract work abroad is such an exciting thing. But being able to provide (not to provide for bonggacious occasions) is such a sweet thing.

Dumb Ways To Die

I watched a very cute cartoon music video about dumb ways to die. It quite entertaining actually. let me show you the lyrics and video below and learn from it.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not actually telling you to do this. It may look simple but in real life, you won't want to experience it.

Live life!

Dumb Ways to Die

Set fire to your hair
Poke a stick at a grizzly bear
Eat medicines that’s out of date
Use your private parts as piranha bait

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die

Get your toast out with a fork

Do your own electrical work
Teach yourself how to fly
Eat a two week old unrefrigerated pie

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die

Invite a psycho-killer inside

Scratch your drug dealer’s brand new ride
Take your helmet off in outer space
Use your clothes dryer as a hiding place

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die

[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsty.com/tangerine-kitty-dumb-ways-to-die-lyrics.html ]

Keep a rattlesnake as pet
Sell both the kidneys on the internet
Eat a tube of superglue
“I wonder what’s this red button do?”

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die

Dress up like a moose during hunting season

Disturb a nest of wasps for no good reason
Stand on the edge of a train station platform
Drive around the boom gates at a level crossing
Run across the tracks between the platforms
They may not rhyme but they’re quite possibly

Dumbest ways to die ie

Dumbest ways to die
Dumbest ways to die
So many dumb
So many dumb ways to die

Be safe around trains. A message from Metro

How to Create a Blog Account Using Blogger.com

Blogs.
Blogging.
Bloggers.

Page.
Posts.
Website.

These words are now my bestfriends. Blogging is now becoming my hobby for the past two months.

I just started my blogging 2 months ago. I am happy with the results. I always track how many pageviews I have everyday.  It's so funny that everytime I look on the graph, it's like I am reading an ECG. On the other hand while in the hospital, I smile everytime I see an ECG paper imagining my dashboard.

I am happy that people read my stories and I hope they get something from it.

Some of my friends already asked how to blog. Now I am going to tell you how I started. Before blogging, my intentions were to announce that I am having a business and trying to convince other people to join me. As I go along, I realized that I can help other people by blogging on helpful articles to inspire them about nursing, tithing, blogging, healthy living, and many others. For others, blogging is now a trend to inform other people when it comes to :

finding good destinations for a vacation without paying much,
        recipes to die for,
        how to invest,
        how be beautiful,
        how to take photographs,
        and many more...

If you are a writer or have passion in writing and want to influence/help other people by informing them thru blog writing, this might be for you!

Ok, let's begin. Below are the step by step process on creating a blog account in Blogger:

1. Firstly, you must create a google mail account.
2. Secondly, log into Blogger.com using your gmail account and password.
3. From there, you can now start creating your account.
4. Fill up the title (title of your blog site), address (your name).
5. For the template, choose from the various templates shown. You can start selecting with the simple templates.
6. Click on "Start Posting" beside the line "Your blog has been created".
7.Now you can start posting your first blog filling in the title box.
8. You can now work on your first article. Then click "Publish"
9. Now your first article has been made. Congratulations.

Bo's Maid is Richer Than I!

It is true that Bo Sanchez' maids is richer than me and it could be richer than most of us.

Last year, I subscribed a free ebook from Bo entitled  "My maid Invest In the Stock Market." At first, I was so amazed how Bo did that, and not to mention how his maids understand that. He taught his maids how to invest. Hmm, how could that be possible? I once tried to open and read an article about Philippine Stock Market, and oh no! Like I can't even understand any single statement. As Bo described it, " the dialect spoken is from the planet Uranus!" okay never mind, but I'm willing to learn.

Just yesterday, after opening my email, I was so happy to be updated about the maids! The controversial maids. Bo informed that his maids are richer than many managers. Can you imagine that? Well, I say including me who is payed a higher salary than them. I think I'd like to apply to Bo as his children's nanny or private nurse. Maybe I'll be happy to be guided to my stock investment as well.

In the email, it says there that his maid invested three years ago. Then, I begun calculating. Ist year... 2nd year.. Ok it's been two years when I got a regular paying job (it's not that high payed- a starting pay if you are curious) then after another 9 months, my contract will be ending! Hello world!

I started asking do I have enough? Did I save enough? It won't be easy to start again. Yes, Bo's maid made more enough money than me!

I should start now! I just invested on Truly Rich Club. Being a member of this club has made me excited to wake up and check my email and the member's website. I am not only informed about which company to invest in but also my faith is being supplied with useful articles Bo has made.

By the way for your information Bo is a lay preacher. I consider him as an inspiration and also for many. He speaks like a fountain overflowing with dreams and faith and animated stories! He is not the typical preacher. He brings bible stories to life and understandable! He has more characteristics to mention.

Anyway, if you are interested about investing in the stock market. Well I am encouraging you but this does not apply to all. As Bo said, this is for people who have regular job or regular income. Please click the link below to learn more about investing and be richer than the maids of Bo. Isn't that challenging?

Truly Rich Club

P.S. I am not telling everybody to become rich! It is beyond getting rich and having all the things you want in the world! Bo Sanchez is not keeping himself billionaire just for himself. He is one multi billionaire using his money for his missions and charity works. Not to mention, he is not receiving any from the tithe payed by the church goers.  To learn more how he became rich and why he wanted to be rich please click this link Truly Rich Club

Be a member like us who wants to donate millions for the charity! Crossing my fingers!

When SALARY Comes: Budget

Have you ever told yourself, "When I'll have enough money , I'll be buying this item. And this thing,  an olympus pen digital camera" pointing to a dress and a camera while having a window shopping in the mall on a monday afternoon.

I want one. photocredits from google images.

Have you even asked, "Why is my financial status seems to be so depended on receiving my salary at the end of the month?" It is all depended at the end of the month, when salary comes.

The next day, your relative or friend texted you, "Yvonne, friend/cuz, I'm in need of something....I'll be needing your help. Since nasa abroad ka naman, baka pwede kang mag-pautang."

Oh yes! Ok, planned out. The other thing on my list to buy must go for now. I'll be buying it the next month kung sale pa. Since friendship or relationships are far beyond important than that pretty dress I have been wanting. Oh my gosh! I have been imagining that dress be worn on my most special day as a reward for a job well done. Job well done? Yes! Give me an applause for working hours of walking, talking, cleaning the patients mouth, giving him/her food. While the others sit back on their chair, drinking coffee, I work and work and work. Well, I'm dedicated. That's it!

Let's go back to the main topic. Ok. Most of us are not stable, even if you say you are regular on a job. Their are lots of things you need to pay or to save for.

Bills.
Load Credits.
Internet Bills.
Tithe. (Uhuh, it works wonders when you give back to God)
Food.
Water. (we are not provided with free water. In the middle east, water is high-priced.)
Clothes (winter is coming up, i needed to jackets /sweaters and socks)

This is the reason why I am encouraging you to save! Put aside for emergencies. On my next blog, I'll be writing about how one of the wealthiest entrepreneur budgets his own money and how he started. I'll be writing about the popular Mr. Eugenio Sanchez or known as Bo Sanchez. How he started to be a poor missionary and becoming a rich missionary using his money not for his own good but for his humble missions of spreading the Gospel.

Behind Lissette's Smile

Lissette enjoying holiday in DEAD SEA- reading a magazine while floating!
I really can't get over this awesome picture! This is really one of my favorite of the "poor woman's photographs". It's not only my favorite because it was taken in dead sea just like in magazines but I love it because of the SUBJECT. That is how beautiful Lissette is. Inside and out, she is captivating. She never fails a photo with her Monalisa smile.

She is a nurse working in Jordan. With three days off allotted to her, she spent it well floating in dead sea. Well dead sea is known for its saltiest waters and making the tourists float on it's surface.

For your information, Dead sea is 400 meters below Mediterranean Sea, which means it is the lowest point. It's just a pleasure to have floated on the said place due to it's saltiness. Another thing is the mud pack therapy. Applying the mud coming directly from the underground which is full of minerals can give you smooth and mineralized skin after.

Well, this is how some of the Filipino workers relax themselves from work. They just get creative and makes use of the resources around them. I just hope and pray that all overseas workers get rejuvenated after getting tired from their work.

This could be the reason behind Lissette's smile. Being away from the family and missing them, tiring work dealing with fareign clients, and physical and psychological drain, she just needs some well deserved pampering from nature, which she likes best.

Deaf people are not Dumb

We have a patient who has inability to hear and speak. That makes me feel bad that I can't communicate to him at all. Before I went for duty, I tried to open the you tube site on how to greet a patient using sign language. I taught myself how to say "how are you?" and how to ask "are you ok?"

Deaf people are not dumb. They are still normal human beings who have feelings. They have the right to receive information and the right to have attention. It is very frustrating for them to tell what they feel when you don't understand them. They cannot hear and signals are the only way to let them know.

I have been learning sign language before (just by internet) and I know how to do sign language in letters. I finished my gradeschool in SPED -Special Education. Well, I am on the normal class. In our school they categorized us as on the advanced while children with deficiencies are the special children. So sign language is not new to me. However, I did not learn more about it.

Now that I am working, meeting people with such inabilities makes me want to learn more about these things. I am thinking of enrolling myself in a class learning sign language for my patients and my own benefit.

Here is a very touching video about a father and daughter scene and how the disability of the father affected their lives.

Say It! Learn new Languages

Two of my roommates (who are also nurse) are currently and continuously learning a new language besides their mother tongue- Filipino. One of them, Ker,enrolled to a French class and the other, Mami Lis, is learning Chinese Mandarin through her iPod.Ker, is applying for immigration in Canada. As a requirement, she has to learn basic French and must take an exam to qualify her. She spent more than half of her salary and sacrificed going to class after her work. On the other hand, Mami Lis ( I call her Mami because she calls me back Mami Yvonne, since college) is preparing herself to speak Mandarin to future Chinese clients in Singapore. InshaAllah! (arabic word for in God's will).

Learning different languages makes you a competent nurse. Competent in the sense that you tend to communicate with your clients well during nursing health teachings and competent for writing at least four languages you can speak in your CV or resume.

For nurses (also to those who are interested in working abroad, communication has a big role in caring for the sick. Paano mo nga naman sasabihan si arabong misis na kailangan niyo pong maglakad lakad pagkatapos ng operasyon upang  maging maayos ang daloy ng dugo ninyo. Or how will you be explain the indications of your medications to your clients if you don't understand each other.

It is a good thing that Filipinos learned English as their second language. That makes Filipinos competent compared to other nationalities. Some foreigners even go to the Philippines to learn English Language like Koreans and Japanese (it's just sad that some of them commented that Filipinos are not good english speakers).

Meatless Mondays the Filipino Style

Supporting the Meatless Monday campaign is another way of supporting healthy living for Filipinos.

Meatless Monday is now being adapted in the Philippines. This is also known as Luntiang Lunes. The government is encouraging everybody to eat healthy vegetables during Mondays and resume the regular meaty meals the next days. Monday because it is believed to be the start of the working week so you must be energized to start a happier healthy week.

I am starting my Meatless Mondays tomorrow and getting excited what to cook. I have decided to cook eggplant salad or ensaladang talong.

This is how to make this simple recipe. There are lots of variations of making it and this is how I'll making them tomorrow.

  • Grill two medium sized eggplants. Peel and set aside. Chop onions and tomatoes (bite-size cubes). mix the three ingredients. Add a spoonful of white vinegar, salt and ground pepper to taste. Add ginisang bagoong (optional). then mix. Serve and enjoy.
I know this is usually used  as a side dish but I eat them as viand.

I am also imagining meatless mungbean soup or shall I call it luntiang monggo na may kamatis :)

  • Soak mungbeans/monggo overnight or atleast three hours. Boil it until  cooked. Strain and set aside. Cut onions and mince garlic.Saute onions and garlic. Add cooked monggo.then mash atleast 2/3 of the monggo to create a thick soup texture. Add 1 1/2 cup of water . Add slices of tomatoes then let it simmer for ten minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. I also add chicken cubes or ginisa mix to flavor the soup. You can also add green leafy vegetables if you want such as pechay. Serve hot with steamed rice.
I think I am ready for Meatless Mondays. By that time, I might be encouraged to consider Meatless Wednesday too.

How about you? What will be your Meatless Monday Recipes?

How to Treat Stomatitis (Singaw)

Stomatitis or singaw is commonly described as painful mouth ulcers that could be found on the gums, inner sheeks, tongue, lips or palate. This tiny little enemy in the mouth causes you losing appetite and and even talking.

There are different causes of stomatitis. It could be viral, bacterial, simply mouth irritation, or cold sores. Unlike the first three causes, cold sores (also known as fever blisters)  are contagious. This is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1.

Treatment of stomatitis should be depended on the root cause of the sore. Below are the different treatment for the common symptoms of stomatitis.

To ease the pain and inflammation, try applying the following strategies :
  • avoid spicy foods, hot beverages, and citrus fruits and drinks
  • suck on ice popsickles or gargle on cold water
To treat the possible infection, you may do the following:
  • rinse mouth with 1 cup of cold water with a tablespoon of salt. Do its as often as you can. Salt acts as an antiseptic.
  • using hydrogen peroxide is also one way of killing bacteria. with 1:1 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and water, you already have an antibacterial mouthwash
  • baking soda with water (1:1 ratio) is also one suggested treatment for mouth ulcers
  • antiviral medications as recommended by physician.
To relieve the pain,  you can you the following as per physician's advise :
  • tylenol
  • topical anesthetic agent such as lidocaine, or xylocaine
  • topical corticosteroid preparations.
Boost your immune system with:
  • Adequate fruits and vegetables
  •  proper exersice and adequate rest and sleep
Stomatitis, or mouth ulcers should no longer than 2 weeks , even without treatment. If still persists, you better have an appointment with your physician about proper assessment and management.  Some patients with mouth ulcers needs deficiency test for vitamin B 12 or folate.

However, the most important thing to do is to perform frequent mouth care not only concerning your teeth but also to your gums, palate, and tongue. Soft bristled toothbrush is advisable to clean your teeth and slight sweeping on the gums and tongue. Proper mouth rinsing is also recommended. Also, you must avoid alcohol based mouthwashes..

Myths About The Nursing Profession

“I know you've heard it a thousand times before. But it's true - hard work pays off. If you want to be good, you have to practice, practice, practice. If you don't love something, then don't do it.”
Ray Bradbury (born 1920);Author

As a nurse, I am bothered  with the different rumors about the nursing profession. Parents and students are mislead to the following myths. They enroll themselves to nursing from a wrong idea.

From the myths that I'll be mentioning below, you might be NOT be surprised at all. Probably, a lot of you would agree with. These myths are more applicable for Filipino nurses.

1. It is a guarantee that after passing the NLE, I'll immediately have a nursing career due to nursing shortages.  Passing the board exam does not necessarily mean that you are what the employer is looking for. Expertise/ knowledge about the nursing job is important. Interviews would always ask for experiences that would prove that you are ready to apply for the job. However, showing willingness to learn and respect for your superiors will always show humility and dedication which works for some employers. It is always best to continue education by attending masterals or even joining significant and updated seminars related to nursing skills.

2. Nursing career will make you rich. It is not the career which will make you rich but your attitude towards success. Some nursing jobs abroad offers high paying nursing positions but this means you have to have significant years experiences and knowledge towards the jobs. Not all nurses who work abroad are high-payed. Newly graduate nurses who have no paid experiences (even how long your volunteer experience will not be considered) have lesser salary compared to nurses with paid experiences. Remember that there is always a beginning for everything.

3. You must be a volunteer to become nurse. In the Philippines set-up, most newly graduate nurses are into volunteering works in government hospitals. But, not all of the hospitals who accept volunteers would make you a regular staff nurse. However, I am not saying that volunteering work is not encouraged. Some volunteers use this opportunity to learn the skills in a hospital set-up working with real patients and equipments.

4.  Nurse shortages guarantee more nursing job offers. Philippines have large numbers of Filipino nurses and increasing every year. It is true that a lot of the hospitals have low number of nurses but it does not necessarily mean that they are offering/ accepting nurse applicants. This is the reason why some nurses go abroad to continue their nursing career. While, some nurses practice a different job not related to nursing such as call center agents, medical representatives, and ESL teachers, etc.,

5. A nurse always practices in a hospital setting. The hospital is just one of the areas where a nurse can practice her profession. Nursing can be as exciting and flexible for you can work as a nurse in different places. Nurses can work as an Company Nurse/ Occupational Nurse, Clinic Nurse, Travel Nurse, Nurse Corp, and many more.

Nurses, let not these myths hinder you from reaching your dreams. Nursing Profession has a lot to offer. It is true that this is not an easy job. This job needs dedication just like other profession. Nursing needs nurses who truly care and who aims for the good of her patients.

Life after Nursing Licensure Examination

It's been four years after I took the Nursing Licensure Exam. I began to ask myself where am I now?

Being a nurse in the Philippines is somewhat challenging. Aside from thousands of graduating nurses every year, competing with experience, intelligence and surviving the unending requirements from the agency are just some of the stressors of a newly graduate nurse.

Do we really have to plan what to do next after the licensure exam? I didn't have much plans before. Ending in a stable job was my goal but I really have never known how to start this career.

It took me a year to volunteer in the different hospitals in our town, both public and private. I also worked as an on-call clinic nurse and a private duty nurse. I'm glad I worked with good and and highly skilled nurses. With them I was able to enjoy those unpaid services I've made. In return, learning by experiencing theories with the real patients was the real catch.

Thanks to the unending love and support from my mom. I was able to pay my lunch, pay my fare,  uniforms, and too many to mention (not to mention the registration fee for the volunteering).

Luckily, Jordan Hospital and Medical Center hired Filipino nurses and I was one of them who landed the job. Three years contract! But I still took it. The job is located in the Middle East but  I still said yes. I'll be away from my family but still accepted the job.

Till now, I never had a vacation in my country. I have to pay my plane tickets on my own if ever I want to, which would be equivalent to 4-5 months salary. Okay let's stop to that. No more complaining. Ten months more then I'll be home sweet home.

So here I am in my first paid job. I really never expected to be like this. Sabi nga, walang trabahong madali, ganito pala ang maghanap-buhay. Smile, another complaining.

Anyway, I love nursing. For now, I'm too young to quit. I'm so energized  to lose hope. I'm hungry for new learning (sad to say, I did not attend the free ACLS lecture today). My skills are sayang if I will quit (naman!). My pledge (oath) as a professional nurse has to remain as a pledge at least 7 times I will renew my license.

Suzzane Gordon states “Nursing is a package of medical, technical, caring, nursing know-how — that nurses save lives, prevent suffering, and save money.”

save lives, prevent suffering, and save money

Save money! Oh, yes! Nurses must know a lot of remedies while the medication is not at hand, before a diagnosis and treatment of an ill should be made. Understanding what the environment can offer to decrease high body temperature. Instructing patients that handwashing should be a habit. Some fruits and vegetables which are high in vitamin C must be eaten. These are just examples of saving money for the patients or patients to-be.

Life after the NLE is to become a nurse. However, I'm not saying it's a must. A lot of Filipino professional nurses ended up as a rich call-center agent, excellent richer ELS teachers and some richest networking marketers. These were their choice but ended happy and contented. For the surviving nurses on the nursing field, just keep competing!

Be motivated! There is so much ahead of us. Breathe. Attend to your needs. Eat for atleast 20 minutes. Empty your bladder atleast 2 times your shift! Imagine a nursing job that pays you satisfaction.

Be educated! Don't stop learning. Attend seminars. Read books. Watch related videos about a skill. Ask your seniors about updates. Read new branded medications. Sacrifice atleast 10 minutes for research.

Be inspired! think about your family. Connect with them when you are away.Think of the places you want to travel. Read hirings  for nurses which is suitable for your needs. Connect with people who are humble and  generous of their time to teach you new things.

Learn to do new other things besides nursing the sick. Plan for small business. Save money for adventures. Earn for your future family. Invest. Think wide. Plan for an early retirement.

Build a positive attitude! Cleaning the poop is not the only thing we can offer. There's more. Let us smile and be fruit full of our work. Refrain from complaining even if you want to tell the patient,  "it's already end of my shift, let the next shift nurse help you about it(I've tried that and it didn't feel good at all)".

These are just some of the things we should focus on. Love our selves as we love our work. The patients gave us our job. Yes, I have to remind myself all of these things. let us motivate each other.

Attention nurses, take full advantage of whatever opportunity has to offer.
